Saving Collard Green Seeds

Collards are bi-annual, so this year, after the snow melted, seed-laden shoots shot of of the main stalks. Once they matured, we cut them off and hung them in the greenhouse to dry....

so, when I finally got around to it, here is how i saved the seeds. I "threshed" the pods by hand into a bowl

the pod skins and the seeds separate and fall into the bowl...

the pod skins can be easily skimmed off because they are light and papery...

and that is that. I did the same thing to get a lot of mustard green seeds too. We will also be able to save some swiss chard seeds as well. The remains (dry stalks and pods) seem like they will make great fire starting material or worm bin bedding.
