At work and at home, I spend a hell of a lot of time staring at a computer screen. Granted, much of that time is well spent. I am usually either doing social organizing work of sorts, coordinating community media projects, making videos or animations, or lately - researching urban agriculture and permaculture. Over my desk, at work, i keep a small sign that reads "typewriters ar cooler than computers." People laugh at that, and seem to be in disbelief that I still use a typewriter. A quick note on why typewriters are cooler than computers. First of all... I collect typewriters because I think they are unexplainably and totally badass. I think this is somehow related to my bike fetish as well. It's something about that level of raw mechanics that attracts me. I dont know. But the point: one's relationship to language is related to the way that the words go on the page. The act of applying letters to the page one by one to create words which create sentences (or not) is a much more contemplative and real relationship to language than computers are able to offer. Not to mention that typing looks much better than some lame-o inkjet crap. Some day, when i get a new camera, I will post some pics of my typewriters.
